Latest internal combustion engine Lotus debuts this summer

The new sports car from Lotus could completely replace the Elise, Exige and Evora in the lineup.

The Evija hypercar and upcoming Lotus SUV are already in development, but the Hethel-based brand is not yet abandoning its traditional combustion engine. According to a foreign publication, citing a source familiar with the company’s plans, the latest fuel model of the British sports car brand will debut this summer.

Specifications remain a mystery, but Lotus CEO Phil Popham said in a telephone conversation that the new model will be available in a wide range of prices. The base version will cost 55,000 pounds and, depending on configuration, will rise to 105,000 pounds.

Given such a broad price point, it is likely that the aging Elise, Exige and Evora models could be dropped from the lineup and replaced by this new single model. During a phone call, the head of the firm said that production is scheduled to begin in 2022, and he is confident that the car will provide Lotus with “significant growth.” He further mentioned that the novelty is being developed as a global model.

Popham did not go into details about the car, but only said that it benefits from a “modern electric architecture” that allows Lotus to offer more connectivity. The unnamed sports car will sit on a platform designed to enhance everyday usability, especially when it comes to getting in and out of the cabin.

In addition, it became known that Lotus does not rule out the possibility of selling a new platform for electric sports cars, which it is developing with Alpine. The replacement for the A110, recently announced ahead of its official launch in 2025, will feature a new EV architecture that will also underpin the Lotus-badged model.

The two small-scale brands talk about equipment “within months” and do not rule out the prospect of sharing the platform with third parties because the sports car segment is small and selling enough vehicles to cover the investment made during development is difficult. Sharing the costs by selling the platform to other companies would allow Lotus and Alpine to recover some of their investment.
