Lamborghini celebrates anniversary of a unique modelNovember 11, 2020
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Lamborghini Jarama GT, unveiled for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1970.
Jarama, whose name comes from the area north of Madrid known for breeding bulls for bullfighting, was the latest version of the Grand Touring 2 + 2 concept sedan with a 4.0-liter 12-cylinder engine located at the front. Based on the previous 400 GT and Islero, it retained the same mechanical layout, but had a silhouette that Marcello Gandini designed, much more in line with the stylistic trends of the 70s, using angular lines.
The chassis was updated, as was the braking system – all the brakes were disc, and the front ones were also ventilated. The track width has increased by 10 cm to 1490 mm. The wheels are set with Campagnolo 15-inch magnesium alloys.
The engine, fitted with six Weber 40 DCOE twin-barrel carburettors, was the well-proven Lamborghini V12 with two overhead camshafts per row, capable of 350 hp. and a top speed of 260 km / h.
The interior has become the standard of luxury, with leather upholstery, air conditioning and a comfortable interior for a sports car. Also amazed quite a roomy trunk.
Jarama production after the 1972 Geneva Motor Show was expanded with a 365 hp version of the Jarama GTS. with a cross-section air intake on the bonnet and two air outlets behind the front wheel arches. Inside, it featured a redesigned dashboard with new instruments and a different shape for the front seats, which increased the capacity of the second row of seats.
A total of 328 units were produced, but the Jarama has become an important model in Lamborghini history, not only for its beauty, which has not lost its charm over the past 50 years, but also because it was the last grand tour with a front engine. in the model range of the brand. From now on, with the exception of the LM 002 and Urus SUVs, Lamborghini vehicles will only have a rear engine layout.
