Kia represents 8-speed automatic transmission for front-wheel carsSeptember 6, 2016
The new transmission will be called FWD 8AT and will be manufactured at the Kia plant. Among the priorities for the development of transmissions, the main purpose is to provide a high level of efficiency from a mechanical point of view and smooth gear.
The automaker said the new 8-speed gearbox is 3.5 kg lighter than 6-speed shift on which it comes, but the size will not differ from the previous version and will occupy the same place.
On the development of transmissions Kia is working hard from 2012 and the automaker has registered 143 new patents. The first car that will get a new transmission is the new model Kia Cadenza 2017. Transmission will be set as the base 3.3-liter engine V6 GDI.
South Korean brand plans to offer them in several upcoming models, especially in models of middle and high class, but only for front wheel drive cars, because this box is developed for this purpose.
Kia says that they have developed 8-speed transmission so well that managed to reduce the size of the fuel pump that brings significant power loss in conventional automatic gearboxes.
In addition, there was a simplified design of the valve body. This element is essential to a standard automatic transmission, and Kia managed to reduce the number of valves from 20 to 12 and at the same time ensuring a faster gear.
Compared with the existing six-speed automatic transmission, which is set to present Kia car models with front-wheel drive, engine block is easier, but it takes the same amount of space, even if it has an additional clutch and transmission.
