Ivan Muller won the first WTCR race in NingboSeptember 14, 2019
Four-time World Touring Champion Ivan Muller won his first victory in the 2019 season by winning the WTCR World Cup opening race in Ningbo, China.
The French racer started from the pole position and was leading all 13 laps of the race. But closer to the finish line he had to worry about the wear of the front right tire, in addition, he was pressed by Ma Qing Hua. Until the checkered flag, the idol of the local stands hung on the leader’s tail, but did not find the opportunity to go forward, so the status quo was preserved.
Muller finished with an advantage of 0.263 seconds and thus brought the Chinese brand Lynk & Co victory on the home track.
In the fight for third place, Mikel Atskona withstood the pressure from Norbert Michelis, and Nick Catsburg crossed the finish line after them, taking the fifth place for the third time in the last four races.
Aurelien Panis, Augusta Farfus, Johan Kristofferssson, Nils Langeveld and Rob Huff completed the top ten at the finish line.
Unlucky championship leader Esteban Guerrieri. Because of problems with a fire extinguisher, the Argentinean started from the pit lane and finished only 19th. He kept the first line in the overall standings, but now ahead of his closest competitor Norbert Michelis by only nine points.
The second and third WTCR races in Ningbo will be held on Sunday.
