Having won the first victory of the season at the last stage in the Spa, in Monza, Ferrari switched to a new, more powerful version of the power plant – and before the weekend, many considered them the favorites of the race on the home track.

Charles Leclair was the leader in training on Friday, Sebastian Vettel showed the best time on Saturday morning, but the results were solid – and in the third training, the first six fit three-tenths.

The FIA warned the riders about the need to comply with the boundaries of the highway in Parabolica – and if four wheels left the white line, they immediately canceled two circles – on which the violation occurred and the next one.

Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasley and Lando Norris received fines for replacing the power plant components and will start from the last rows – for them, the qualification results did not matter.

Tires brought to Monza the “middle” three of compositions – C2, C3 and C4 tires were used as Hard, Medium and Soft. During the qualification, the riders sought to be in a slip stream for other cars in order to gain an advantage on the straight lines.

In the first session, Ferrari drove the first attempt to Medium, the rest to Soft. Racers worked in a series of circles, teammates took turns dispersing each other.

At the 14th minute red flags appeared – Sergio Perez’s car lost its pace, he stopped her at the post of marshals in Curva Grande and dropped out of the fight. The car was quickly evacuated, after a few minutes the session continued.

Verstappen complained of loss of power and slowly returned to the pits.

The best time was shown by Charles Lecler – 1: 20.126. Grosjean, Perez, Russell, Kubica and Verstappen dropped out of the further struggle.

In the second session, everyone went to Soft. Raikkonen flew into gravel in the first Lesmo, ruining the attempt.

In the first attempt, Leclair led the protocol – 1: 19.553, and in the second, Hamilton was the fastest – 1: 19.464.

In the final, everyone used Soft. Leclair managed to drive a circle at 1: 19.307, when red flags appeared – Raikkonen crashed the car, flying off the highway in Parabolica.

Kimi left the cockpit on his own – the dangerous overload sensor went off, and he was sent to a medical center for inspection. Evacuation of the car and repair of the barrier took ten minutes.

Before the last attempt, the riders slowed down in the third sector – no one wanted to start the circle first in order to be in the slip stream, as a result, the session ended before they crossed the start line.

Ahead, Hulkenberg, Sainz and Stroll drove slowly, not letting the rest go. The first to drive, Nico even cut the chicane in the hope that the peloton would pass by. “It was unworthy of even the younger formulas, everyone looked like idiots,” – said Toto Wolff after qualification.

Stewards will consider this situation – after the qualification of Formula 3, 19 pilots who were driving too slowly were punished immediately.

Charles Leclair won the qualification in Monza, having won the fourth pole of the season. Lewis Hamilton lost four hundredths and also starts from the first row. From the second race, Bottas and Vettel will start, from the third – Riccardo and Hulkenberg.
