Isuzu has officially unveiled the new crossover Mu-XOctober 28, 2020
The third generation of the Japanese crossover Isuzu MU-X has lost all the similarities with the Chevrolet Trailblazer, also moving away from the Isuzu D-Max pickup in design.
A few days ago, patent images of the new generation Isuzu MU-X off-road vehicle were published on the Web, from which we managed to find out most of the information about the new product. Then it was announced that the official debut of the newest car will take place on October 28. Finally, this day has come and in Thailand a completely different MU-X, developed by the brand’s engineers, appeared before us.
Like the D-Max pickup of the current generation, the new SUV is built on the Isuzu Dynamic Drive platform, which the Japanese developed without the participation of specialists from GM. But at the same time, the SUV is very different in design from the pickup: it now has its own grille, front bumper and optics. Moreover, the latter stand out thanks to LED DRLs, as well as thin LED lines in the taillights. At the front, as before, there is an independent double wishbone suspension, and at the rear there is a continuous axle. But if the pickup is suspended on springs, then the MU-X has a spring suspension, and for increased comfort and increased travel, the levers are made longer than in the previous generation car.
In terms of overall dimensions, the new generation of Isuzu MU-X will compete with Mitsubishi Pajero Sport or Toyota Fortuner. So, the length is 4850 mm, the width is 1870 mm, the height is 1875 mm, and the wheelbase is 2855 mm. The stated ground clearance is an impressive 235 mm. The body with the extended use of high-strength steels is stiffer than before: this is necessary both for safety and to reduce vibration load. And the fifth door is made of plastic and can now have an electric drive.
As before, the Isuzu MU-X has simpler versions, but now there are also rich options in the range – with 20-inch wheels and full LED headlights. It is they who are shown in the company photographs. But the interior has almost completely “migrated” from the pickup – it can be distinguished only by some decorative elements. But the main thing is that it is richer and of better quality than its predecessor: softer plastic is used for decoration.
The engine range is also borrowed from the D-Max pickup and is represented by a 1.9-liter turbodiesel with 150 hp. power and 350 Nm of torque, which is paired with a manual transmission of its own production or 6-speed automatic gearbox Aisin, as well as a 3.0-liter 4JJ3 turbodiesel, but with a capacity of only 190 hp. It can only be combined with an automatic transmission.
Isuzu MU-X with a change of generations also acquired a modern set of assistants, including automatic braking and lane tracking systems. But this electronics is only in expensive trim levels, as well as a set of six airbags. And the simple versions have only 2 pillows and a stabilization system.
In Thailand, where the MU-X is being produced, sales of the new generation will start next month. It is possible that over time, the SUV will reach Russia, but there is no official confirmation of such guesses yet. By the way, the new Isuzu D-Max pickup now has a sister model, the Mazda BT-50, so it is highly likely that the Isuzu MU-X SUV will eventually turn into a Mazda.
