Infiniti’s upcoming EVs to receive I-Power designationJanuary 21, 2021
Nissan first debuted the “E-Power” designation for its upcoming electric line, and now Infiniti electric cars can get their name.
Since the end of production of the Q50 Hybrid in 2018, Infiniti has lost its electrified vehicle lineup. This should soon change, however, as the brand has expressed interest in introducing many new electrified models that do not need to be plugged into the mains. Infiniti is expected to borrow Nissan’s e-power technology, which will first hit US sales in the form of the Ariya. The e-power name is also used on Nissan Note in Japan and on hybrid Kicks sold in other markets.
When luxury car makers borrow technology from their mainstream counterparts, they rarely keep their name. While browsing the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office, reporters came across a name that Infiniti might use for its future electrified vehicles. Nissan recently applied for the “I-Power” name, which is suspiciously close to the E-Power name. The letter “I” may represent the Infiniti brand, helping the luxury car manufacturer differentiate its technology from the mainstream Nissan lineup.
The trademark filing does not provide any details about the I-Power, but gives a general idea of what to expect. Filed on January 5, 2021, it has been categorized as Goods and Services and includes the following description: “electric vehicles; car wheel hubs; car wheels; propulsion mechanisms for land vehicles ”.
Nissan may have left a vague statement to keep its plans for the I-Power name secret. In the base configuration, the Ariya will have 214 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque, while the more powerful version will have 388 hp. and 600 Nm of torque. Infiniti’s new CEO, Peyman Karga, has hinted that his company’s new electric models should produce between 200 and 400 hp, which means I-Power could be a direct transition from E-Power, only with a new name.
It is not yet known which Infiniti model will be the first to use the I-Power tuning. The debuts of the QX60 Monograph and QX Inspiration concepts from past years may suggest that the production three-row engine will be one of the first to accept the new nameplate, but there is no official confirmation of this. You just have to wait and see.
