In the US Volkswagen will abandon Passat in favor of crossoversNovember 25, 2020
The German Passat sedan will disappear from the automaker’s model range. The model is expected to be replaced by a crossover.
The North American office of Volkswagen has once again announced its intention to reduce the model range of the brand, removing all cars from it and leaving only SUVs. At the same time, the freed up capacity at the concern’s plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, will be occupied with the production of electric models on the MEB platform, for example, the Volkswagen ID.4 crossover. This was announced at the Wards Auto conference by the head of the brand, Ralph Brandstätter.
Recall that the current version of the Passat has been produced since 2018 and will last for at least another 3 years. At the same time, the sedan differs from the European version. So, it is based on an orderly outdated PQ46 platform, and its dimensions exceed its “brother”. The American sedan is equipped with an uncontested 2.0 liter gasoline turbo unit with a capacity of 176 hp. A 6-speed automatic transmission is used as a transmission.
They do not plan to reduce the European and Chinese versions of the Volkswagen Passat – models of the next generations are already being prepared.
