In the US, scientists have promised to reduce the price of batteries hundreds of timesJanuary 28, 2020
The American startup Form Energy, together with the US Department of Energy, is developing a battery that can hold a charge of “tens of hours” and will be significantly cheaper than lithium-ion analogues.
It is reported by Business Insider. According to scientists, one of the prototypes of the future battery is a “sulfur-sulfur running battery.”
“Unlike smartphones or electric vehicles, energy storage is not limited in space and does not have to be too spacious per unit of weight or volume, their main criterion is the price,” says startup head Mateo Jaramillo, who worked for seven years at Tesla. After leaving the company, he began to create batteries suitable for solar or wind power stations.
Despite the advantages of lithium-ion batteries (capacity, lightness, durability), they are not suitable for storing energy on an industrial scale because of their price. In order to solve this problem, Form Energy management promises to create batteries that will be “50 or 100 times cheaper? Than lithium-ion.”
Investors believed the scientists ’promises – the total investment in the startup amounted to about $ 110 million. Bill Gates venture company Breakthrough Energy Ventures, the European energy giant Eni and the Saudi oil company Saudi Aramco also were sponsors of the project.
According to experts, for a new battery to be economically viable, it should hold a charge of about 100 hours at a price of about $ 5 per kW / h. At the same time, modern lithium-ion batteries cost hundreds of dollars per kW / h, the publication notes.
