In the concern Fiat ask about the assets of SauberFebruary 5, 2019
Last week, the Formula 1 Commission supported the change of the name of the team Sauber, which from this year will be called Alfa Romeo Racing. But it is possible that the matter will not be limited to a simple change of signs: Fiat management can take the next step and buy out the assets of the Swiss team.
At the moment, it belongs to the holding company Islero Investments, for which there is a Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing, co-owner of the concern Tetra Laval. According to Auto Bild Motorsport, the head of Fiat, John Elkann, made an offer: the team is on sale, but it’s necessary to decide on its possible acquisition before the summer.
Alfa Romeo, like Ferrari, is part of Fiat Chrysler Italy S.p.A., and for the time being, its participation in the Swiss team is limited to the role of the sponsor. However, the seriousness of the intentions of the Italian side says at least the fact that last year the position of technical director of Sauber was taken by Simone Resta, a talented and experienced engineer, specialist in the field of aerodynamics, who previously worked at Ferrari, who has a long and close relationship with Mattia Binotto, the new head of the Scuderia. At the same time, Resta still receives a salary from Maranello.
In addition, it is no coincidence that Kimi Raikkonen’s partner in Alfa Romeo was the 25-year-old Antonio Giovinazzi, a graduate of the Ferrari Racing Academy, who collaborated with Sauber and Haas last season, and also actively worked on the simulator in Maranello.
Of course, in Hinwil on the eve of the new championship are set to combat, including the Formula 1 veteran Kimi Raikkonen, who clearly wants to spend the final stage of his career as bright as possible. We can recall his words: “I see no reasons that prevent us from showing good results. For this, the team has everything you need, including an excellent wind tunnel. She has everything to build a beautiful car, and, moreover, we use Ferrari engines, so we know what we are dealing with. “
If in 2019 the team will meet the expectations associated with it and continue to progress, perhaps it will speed up the decision of Fiat’s management to acquire it. An example of successful technological cooperation between Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso suggests that both sides benefit from this – it is likely that Ferrari are planning to form such an alliance with the former Sauber, which will help to prepare more effectively for the radical reforms of 2021.
