In Porsche built an engine for Formula 1December 28, 2019
Discussions about the arrival of the Volkswagen concern in Formula 1 have been going on for a long time, but at some point the company decided to focus on participation in Formula E, and now two brands of the concern are performing in the electric series – Audi and Porsche. The head of Porsche Motorsport, Fritz Erzinger, said that at a certain point in time, the company seriously considered participation in Formula 1 and even built an engine.
Fritz Erzinger: “We were very close to moving to Formula 1. In 2017, the Board of Directors ordered us to develop an engine that Porsche not only designed, but also built. We participated in the discussion of the rules together with the FIA and Liberty Media.
However, at the stage of engine construction, the group management decided to focus on performing in the electric series. By that time, the 1.6-liter V6 engine was already tested at the stand. Nevertheless, the work was not in vain, since we were able to use many of the solutions in other projects. ”
Erzinger added that Porsche plans to participate in Formula E for another five years before the tenth season, while plans for the future are not yet defined.
