For the first time in three years, Japanese experts gave the victory to a model wearing a local brand logo.

The organizers of the “Car of The Year Japan” competition (Car of The Year Japan) have finally decided on the name of the winner. The fifth generation Toyota RAV4 crossover was the best. This victory can be called historical for two reasons. The first – the title of car of the year for the first time since 2016 earned the “Japanese”, the second – the Japanese brand did not fall into the leaders for 10 years. The third time the third-generation Prius hybrid won the competition in 2009. The award has its history since 1980. The last two years, the rating was led by crossovers of the Swedish brand Volvo – XC60 and XC40.

The contestants were judged by a professional jury of 69 Japanese journalists. The models that entered the market from October 2018 to November 2019 could compete for the honorary title of the car of the year. This year, 35 cars met this requirement, of which a dozen finalists were subsequently selected.

In addition to Toyota RAV4, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, BMW 3 Series, Jeep Wrangler, Jaguar I-Pace, Honda N-WGN, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Nissan Dayz and Daihatsu Tanto fought for the title of best.

Experts gave Toyota RAV4 436 points. The winner of the second place – Mazda3 – got 328 points, and the bronze medalist of the BMW 3 Series – 290 points. A rich line of all-wheel drive modifications, a roomy trunk, a large saloon and good handling helped break the Japanese crossover into the lead. In general, for Toyota this is the eighth victory in the competition.
