IIHS toughens crash tests for side impactNovember 22, 2019
The side impact crash test has been modified to better reproduce how a collision with a pickup or SUV occurs in the real world.
Undoubtedly, new cars have become much safer in the last few years, and this is not the merit of the federal government of the NHTSA, which has yet to update its safety ratings, but for now almost every car gets five stars. This is due to voluntary standards set by the Insurance Institute for Road Safety (IIHS), and one of the six trials of the group has become even more difficult – again.
IIHS says it is updating its side impact crash test because it is now too easy for cars to drive it. When side impact tests began for the first time in 2003, only one in five cars received the highest rating of “Good”. By reinforcing the side structures and installing side airbags to protect the heads of passengers, car manufacturers have improved test results to the point where today 99% of IIHS vehicle tests are rated “Good” in the test.
“The program was so successful that the current side ratings no longer help consumers distinguish between cars and point the way to further improvements,” the group said in a statement.
IIHS stated that since a fixed barrier has “uniform” stiffness throughout its structure, it cannot fully demonstrate how the front structure of a real vehicle varies in stiffness. Dates for car manufacturers have not yet been set to pass the updated test.
