The Korean carmaker is facing a class action lawsuit in California after one owner accused the carmaker of selling its vehicles with safety features that were virtually nonexistent.
According to a lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Central District of California, the new Hyundai Ioniq has been touted as a vehicle with a blind spot assistant and rear cross-traffic sensor to help avoid a collision. However, the vehicles, or in this case the plaintiff’s Ioniq Limited, only come with warning systems.
To differentiate itself from others, Assist reduces the risk of rear-end collisions and blind spot collisions by applying emergency braking when needed. However, the presented system only warns the driver of imminent danger, but does not interfere with the operation of the systems.
According to the applicant, the label of his Ioniq Limited clearly states that his vehicle must be equipped with Assist systems and not simply alert him to danger. Hyundai, however, responded to the complaint that everything is correct, as these vehicles should only come with warning systems. The complaints about the cars did not contain a single photograph of the said sticker, nor did it indicate which Hyundai Ioniq was involved in the lawsuit.
According to the owner, he contacted Hyundai several times about the problem, but “nothing helped and Hyundai did not offer any solutions to the problem.”
