Hyundai introduced its compact crossover AX-1 to tests
February 3, 2021It looks like Hyundai hasn’t finished expanding its crossover lineup yet. The South Korean manufacturer has a large number of models in its global portfolio, but the company wants to create a subcompact crossover.
Photo spies managed to prove that the Korean Hyundai is developing a new crossover, which will be one step below the Kona or Bayon. We do not know its real name, but so far it is known under the in-house index AX1. The model was captured on tests, which, apparently, did not go according to plan.
This may be our first encounter with the AX1, but the compact crossover appears to be in an advanced stage of development. According to Motor1, the test car was fitted with production body panels despite the heavy camouflage, and it looks like the black cloth camouflage also hid the production headlights and taillights.
At the moment, we do not know if this model will be global or if it will be sold mainly in Asia. Under the hood is rumored to be a turbocharged 1.0-liter engine mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission. Interestingly, the prototype had disc brakes on all four wheels, which is unusual for a car of this size.
Considering what we see in the spy photos, the production version of the AX1 crossover could debut very soon. We don’t have an exact launch date yet, but we expect to find out more in the coming weeks.
