If you have ever felt the warmth of a smartphone after playing a mobile game for an hour or two, you are well aware that batteries produce a lot of heat. In fact, there is so much heat that Tesla has had serious problems in this area in the past. Even with advances in technology, fire is still a real threat, even for cars like the Porsche Taycan.
Everyone knows that air conditioning and heating systems reduce power even in cars that run on fuel. On electric vehicles, this dramatically reduces the electric range, and excessive heat reduces battery performance. Hyundai has been working in this direction for many years, and its modern electric cars are different from competitors.
Resourceful experts from Hyundai and Kia have found a way to take advantage of the heat from rechargeable vehicles and developed a heat pump that was first introduced at the 2014 Kia Soul EV. This pump removes heat from the electrical components of the car, uses it to power the climate control system. According to the Norwegian Automobile Federation, as a result of lower battery temperatures, Kona EV maintained 91% of its combined range, while 19 other electric vehicles lost 18 to 43% of their total range.
In addition, Hyundai and Kia opted for water-cooling their batteries, which allowed a 35% increase in battery density relative to larger air-cooled systems. In general, the affairs of the “Koreans” are developing quite well, and companies promise to continue developing this system and other innovations in the field of heat management. The medium-term goal is to make Hyundai one of the three leaders in the production of electric vehicles by 2025, and Kia intends to offer up to 11 different electric cars by the same time.
