SSC Tuatara debuted at Pebble Beach

The American firm SSC North America (or Shelby SuperCars) presented the supercar Tuatara at the Pebble Beach elegance contest. This is a serial version of the same-name concept car, debuted in 2010. Its main feature is a heavy-duty motor: the V8 with two turbines should develop about 1,750 horsepower.

Hypercar is named after the hatteria, a relict lizard inhabiting New Zealand. By the word Tuatara the animal is called aborigines – in Maori it means “crests on the back”. This definition is appropriate to the exterior of the supercar: behind the doors he has a pair of small wings, on the back – a pair of aerodynamic fins.

The chassis and bodywork are completely original: the basis is a carbon fiber skeleton. External panels are also made of the same material. Thanks to this the mass of the car is only 1247 kilograms.

But the power unit is purchased. The engine is prepared by a small studio Nelson Racing Engines from Los Angeles. Initially, SSC promised to install a seven-liter motor, but in the end, the volume is much lower – 5.9 liters. Apparently, the low-end V8 is built on the basis of a serial unit of one of the American manufacturers.

The engine is equipped with two turbines, cooling of the charge air – using a pair of liquid intercoolers, fuel supply – two injectors per cylinder. On ordinary gasoline, it develops 1,350 horsepower, and on the benzene-alcohol mixture E85 maximum power should exceed 1,750 horsepower.

The transmission is a six-speed robotic transmission of the Italian firm Cima. The transmission is made in the traditional scheme with one clutch and is equipped with a sequential switching system from Automac. Similar transmissions are applied on supercars Pagani Zonda, Koenigsegg, Gumpert Apollo.

The exterior of the supercar was created by American designer Jason Castriot. Previously, he worked in the studio Pininfarina, where he participated in the creation of sports cars Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano and Maserati GranTurismo. And as the chief designer, he led the creation of piece Ferrari P4 / 5 by Pininfarina and Ferrari 612 Kappa.

With a 1750-horsepower engine, the SSC Tuatara should become one of the most powerful road cars in the world – if not the most powerful. So, the W16 engine on the newest Bugatti Divo develops 1500 horsepower, the same is the maximum output of the hybrid gasoline-electric installation on the Koenigsegg Regera, the V8 engine 7.6 on the Hennesey Venom F5 emits 1600 hp. The creators of the Arash AF10 (2100 hp) and Devel Sixteen (5000 hp) promise much more, but both cars are still in the status of concept cars. According to the SSC, Tuatara has the best aerodynamics in the class: the drag coefficient is only 0.279 (for comparison, Bugatti Veyron had a score of 0.36, while Koenigsegg Agera had a 0.33). According to the calculations of SSC engineers, this should allow the supercar to reach a maximum speed of 480 kilometers per hour.

The company Shelby SuperCars was founded in 1998, and has nothing to do with the legendary designer Carroll Shelby: it was named after its founder and owner, Jarod Shelby.

The first and so far the only project of the company was the supercar SSC Aero: a coupe with a wedge-shaped body reminiscent of the Lamborghini Diablo, was equipped with eight-cylinder engines from Chevrolet Corvette, boosted by turbocharging.

The company gained fame by entering the Guinness Book of Records: the modification of the SSC Ultimate Aero TT coupe in 2007 developed a speed of 412.28 kilometers per hour. For three years, the supercar was considered the fastest production car in the world, until its result was blocked by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport (431 kilometers per hour).
