How much power will the Corvette C8 Z51 coupe show on a dyno?March 19, 2020
Engineers from the tuning company Hennessey Performance decided to check the power level of the Chevy Corvette C8 generation sports coupe in the more powerful Z51.
After the first copies of the Corvette sports coupe model year 2020 began to come to their owners, we begin to learn more about how much power is actually in the 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine. One of the latest copies of the novelty, whose power was measured on a dynamo, was an orange model acquired by Hennessey Performance. The car was able to show 466 horsepower (611 Nm) on wheels.
This is more than we expected from an engine whose power Chevrolet estimates at 495 hp. on the crankshaft.
It is worth considering the power loss in the vehicle’s transmission at the level of 11%, especially this error is found in modern dual-clutch transmissions. In fact, there are many variables that can affect the design power. Last but not least, this is the type of dynamometer used and the accuracy of the calculated transmission losses. We are not dealing with an old-school mechanical or automatic gearbox using a driveshaft, so its possible loss in a transmission with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox can be even less than 11 percent. The mechanism used for the torque drive is also important because you want the gear ratio to be as close to 1: 1 as possible to get an accurate estimate of the power on the crankshaft.
It is also worth mentioning another test of the new “corvette” on the dyno-stand, which was held in early March. It was reported that that car was able to show 440 hp, as they say, “on wheels”. Take into account the 11 percent transmission loss and you get a value of 495 hp. to the crank – that is, this is the official figure given by the Chevrolet for the corvette in the more powerful version of the Z51.
