Hot rod based on VW Beetle with Porsche unit sold for Toyota Camry priceSeptember 8, 2020
Hemmings has announced the sale of an exclusive sports car called the Das Rod for just $ 26,250. This amount does not even cover the costs of developing a unique hot rod.
The sports car was developed by several American custom-studios at once: they spent 5 years on the project. The base for the design was the 1970 Volkswagen Beetle.
The chassis of the small car was made longer and stronger, and elements from a number of other cars were used in the body design – for example, the fifth generation Chevrolet Corvette. The Beetle lost its roof, instead gaining rear-opening doors and a unique cover over the rear seats.
The chassis used parts from Ford of the 30s of the last century, brake discs from a 1968 Camaro and rear drums from a Porsche 356. The suspension design provides for open wheels: front tires have dimensions 195 / 65R15, rear tires – 245 / 60R15.
The engine is still in the rear, but the power plant is a 1.8-liter Porsche 914 boxer engine with two Weber carburetors. The performance of the engine, which works in conjunction with the 4-speed manual transmission, has been increased to 150 hp.
In addition, it was recently noted that a 1974 production year DeTomaso Pantera sports car was put up for sale. It should be emphasized that the exact mileage of the car is not disclosed, but the current owner drove only 4000 km on it.
