Honda presented Insight hybrid of new generationOctober 4, 2018
The company Honda announced a new generation of Insight hybrid for the home market – in Japan, sales of models will start at the end of this year.
The third generation Serial Insight debuted in March 2018 at the New York Auto Show. After a generation change, the hybrid has evolved from a hatchback design in the style of the former Toyota Prius to a coupe-like sedan. The novelty entered the North American market in the summer: in the USA, Canada and Mexico they sell “four-doors” assembled at the Honda plant in Indiana. It was assumed that the model would not be chosen outside this continent, but today the brand announced that the “four-door” would get to Japan. It is not excluded that in consequence the hybrid will master other markets.
At home, the Honda sedan starts in December, and there they will sell the Insight with a slightly outward appearance: the Japanese version got a different grille, and a spoiler appeared on the trunk lid. Photos of the interior yet, but apart from the location of the steering wheel, differences, most likely, will not.
Details about the “stuffing” of the Japanese Insight version are not disclosed. Probably, the technique of the sedan is the same as that of the American version – the i-MMD power unit, made according to the series-parallel scheme. It includes the Atkinson-powered gasoline “aspirated” 1.5 and two electric motors, one of which is connected to the internal combustion engine, works as a generator, and the second rotates the front wheels. A lithium-ion battery is installed under the rear seat. The combined power of the American version is 153 hp (267 Nm), declared fuel consumption – 4.3 l / 100 km in the urban cycle. Only on electric sedan will be able to drive only 1.6 km.
Issue right-hand drive Insight will adjust in Japan. The price of new items has not yet been announced. By the way, the third generation Insight, in fact, is a hybrid version of the last Honda Civic (the current Civic lacks a hybrid version), the wheelbase of the models is the same – 2,700 mm. Four-door Civic in Japan will cost at least 2 650 320 yen. The hybrid, of course, will be more expensive.
Recall, the first Insight debuted in 1999, when the model was a small “three-door” with a very specific design. The hybrid of the second generation entered the market in 2009, apparently it almost repeated its main competitor – the Toyota Prius. In 2014, the production model was curtailed – Insight could not circumvent the Prius. For example, in the States, for example, in 2010, 20,962 Honda hybrids were sold, while the Toyota model sold almost 141,000 copies in the United States in the same year. With the change of format, interest in the Honda Insight has grown, but the Prius sedan is still inferior: in August 2018, 2212 Insight sedans were sold in the US against 5230 Prius hatchbacks.
