Hero will sell motorcycles under the Harley-Davidson brandDecember 9, 2020
Through Indian publications, it was revealed that Hero MotoCorp will develop and market a premium line of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in India. Among other things, Hero MotoCorp will take care of the maintenance of these motorcycles and the availability of spare parts for them.
Harley recently surprised everyone when it announced that it would be leaving the Indian market to focus on larger markets. The news, understandably, did not like the 33 Indian Harley dealers who were affected by the move and who soon decided to sue the American company.
While Harley-Davidson has announced on the one hand that it will withdraw from India on the other, it has also secured a partnership with local motorcycle company Hero. While there was initially talk of further distribution of Harley motorcycles through the Hero network, it looks like the plan could have been a little more complicated.
According to information gathered by Indian media during a conversation with Hero MotoCorp CFO Niranjan Gupta, it looks like future Harley-Davidson motorcycles sold in India will actually be developed by Hero.
“As part of Hero MotoCorp’s deal with Harley-Davidson, the first will develop and market a premium line of motorcycles in the country under the Harley-Davidson brand,” it said in a statement. “In addition, he will take care of maintenance and spare parts availability for Harley motorcycles.”
This means that Harley will not manufacture motorcycles sold in India, but the Hero will. The Hero will largely replace Harley in the local market including manufacturing, marketing and service. The Indian manufacturer is also likely to benefit from the American firm’s developments that will make future premium Hero models look American-style and offer a more competitive price range. For Harley, this will mean a much faster expansion in the tough market of premium motorcycles in India.
