Hacker tried to trick traffic cameras and received a fine of 12 thousand dollarsAugust 22, 2019
The American found out how to avoid fines from cameras for violations and unpaid parking: for this it is enough to purchase license plates consisting of the word “NULL”. In this case, the system reads the data as “lack of information”.
As part of a meeting of DEF CON hackers, an American con man said that he managed to find a flaw in the system for automatically recording violations. If the camera reads the word NULL, then unpaid parking and other offenses on the road may go unpunished. However, he did not take into account that all fines imposed on cars with unreadable numbers automatically come to the person to whom the NULL registration mark is registered.
Because of this, six months later, fines began to come to him, not only for himself, but also for violators, whose numbers for some reason were not determined in the system. Thus, the total amount of debt exceeded 12 thousand dollars.
The driver was forced to contact the local car registration department and report the incident. The authorities abolished the “foes” fines, but refused to make adjustments to the work of the system. Probably, the motorist still have to change the license plates.
