Guang Yu Zhou kicks off from pole position in SpielbergJuly 5, 2020
If on the eve of Spielberg it rained, to some extent continued on Friday morning, then the weather was quite normal, and by evening the asphalt of the Austrian highway warmed up to 32 degrees.
This is worth mentioning due to the fact that the first qualification in the history of Formula 2 took place at the Red Bull Ring circuit, in which 18-inch Pirelli tires were baptized. And warming them up in cool weather is not so simple.
Perhaps this is precisely at the very beginning of the half-hour session that Giuliano Alesi failed: the French driver did not keep the car on the track, it flew to the side of the road, and he had to return to the pits to change the front wing.
Closer to the middle of the qualification, Guan Yu Zhou, a Renault youth program racer who stands for the UNI-Virtuosi team, was on the first line of the protocol – he was the first to manage to complete the lap faster than 1 minute. 15 seconds Around the same time, it became known that the result of Artyom Markelov was canceled for non-compliance with the limits of the route.
Moreover, Guang Yu Zhou was ahead of his closest rival, Ceyhan Daruvalu from the Carlin team quite seriously, by more than two tenths, but the results of the next nine riders fit only three tenths, i.e. were very dense.
Mick Schumacher closed the first ten at this stage of qualification; Robert Schwartzman, German teammate Prema was 12th. Markelov has not yet risen above the 16th position, and Nikita Mazepin, the third representative of our country in F2, occupied the 17th line. This year he stands for the Hitech GP team, but he was not lucky in training, because of technical problems with the machine, he couldn’t work on the track at all, so he had to “roll in” and still try to find the right rhythm during qualification .
Five and a half minutes before the end of the session, in the 4th corner, the car of Trident racer Marino Sato turned around, the qualification was stopped by red flags, and everyone returned to the boxes.
At this point, Guang Yu Zhou remained in the first position, Daruwala – in the second, but the debutant of the series, Brazilian Felipe Drugovich from MP Motorsport, unexpectedly made it to the third.
Soon after the restart, Mazepin managed to improve his position, he showed the 6th result, but did not stay on this line for long: a whole group of riders drove their final laps faster than him, and in the end he ended the session with 11th time.
Mick Schumacher moved to 5th line, Robert Schwartzman, his Prema teammate to 8th. Mazepin tried to improve the result, but was mistaken and flew off the track. No luck, and Artyom Markelov, he is only the 20th.
But Guang Yu Zhou confirmed that it was not in vain that he claimed the pole position: at the end of the session, he drove the circle even faster and won the qualification in Spielberg with a result of 1 minute. 14,416 seconds, which is more than four tenths better than the nearest pursuer, which turned out to be Drugovich!
From the third position in tomorrow’s race, Callum Aylott, the partner of the pole holder, will start. Next to him on the second starting row will be the car of promising Dane Christian Lundgard, who plays for ART.
From the third row behind Schumacher, Daruwala starts, on the fourth in front of Schwartzman will be the experienced Luca Giotto.
