Like last year, the motorists updated the power plants by the Belgian stage. During the weekend, they were replaced by 14 cars, six racers received fines, but some engines were returned with old engines to serve their sentences in the Spa, where you can overtake, and use them later in the course of the season.

In Red Bull and Toro Rosso, the power plants were changed only to Alexander Elbon and Daniil Kvyat, for them the results of the qualification did not matter – they still start last. Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasley, who returned to Toro Rosso, used Honda engines of the previous “specification 3”.

Lewis Hamilton crashed the car during the morning training, but the mechanics of Mercedes managed to restore it – not at the beginning of the qualification, but a little later.

The Ferrari did not begin to change the power plants, postponing their debut until Monza, but confidently led in the course of three trainings. Twice, including Saturday morning, the protocol was headed by Charles Lecler.

Shinniks brought the toughest compounds to the Spa – in the roles of Hard, Medium and Soft, C1, C2 and C3 acted.

In the first session, everyone went to Soft. In the fifth minute, red flags appeared – a thick cloud of smoke released a new Mercedes motor in a Robert Kubica car. Already the second failure during the weekend – yesterday the new power plant Mercedes refused to Sergio Perez.

The pause lasted ten minutes, then the riders drove off again, including Hamilton – the car was just restored.

On a fast lap Verstappen complained about problems with the car and returned to the pits, and after a pause he drove off again.

At the 27th minute, red flags reappeared – this time a smoke cloud released Alfa Romeo Giovinazzi with the new Ferrari engine.

The protocol was headed by Leclair – 1: 43.587, half a second ahead of Vettel – and for a second Verstappen – the closest opponent from another team.

From the further struggle dropped out: Gasley, Sainz, Russell and Kubica. The start of the second session was postponed for several minutes due to the evacuation of the Giovinazzi car.

In the second session, everyone went to Soft. In the first attempt, Leclair led the protocol, driving a lap of 1: 43.376. In Mercedes they added and Hamilton lost a little more than a couple of tenths.

In the second attempt, Leclair improved – 1: 42.938, retaining the first line. Grosjean, Norris, Stroll, Elbon and Giovinazzi did not reach the final.

In the finals in the first attempt, Leclair was again faster – 1: 42.644. Vettel was mistaken in a quick circle, losing to his partner eight-tenths. Hulkenberg returned to the pits, not completing the circle. In a decisive attempt, Leclair added, setting a new absolute track record – 1: 42.519.

Charles Leclair won the qualification at Spa, winning the third pole of the season. Vettel lost to his partner more than seven tenths, but turned out to be second – tomorrow Ferrari racers will occupy the entire first row of the starting field. For the sixth time in a row, Leclair was ahead of Vettel in qualifying.
