GM will demonstrate a battery with a resource of 1,600,000 kmMay 22, 2020
General Motors is developing a new generation of long-life batteries for electric cars.
Such batteries will not need to be changed until a mileage of 1,000,000 miles (1.6 million km). That is, the batteries will be designed for the entire life cycle of the electric model
As Reuters informs on Thursday, May 21, batteries of modern electric cars, as a rule, serve for 160,000 – 320,000 km. However, there are other estimates. In 2019, the head of Tesla Corporation, Elon Musk, estimated the safety margin of current battery generation at 300,000 – 500,000 miles (480,000 – 800,000 km). Then he made a promise to create batteries withstanding and 1,000,000 miles.
Regarding GM, the corporation showed a new generation of Ultium batteries quite recently – in March this year. They will receive a capacity of 50 to 200 kW / h, provide autonomy up to 640 km and accelerate the electric car to the first “hundred” in 3 seconds. But now it’s not about Ultium, but about the next variation of batteries.
Given the fact that GM has not yet been manufacturing even Ultium batteries, it will take at least several years to expect a battery with an estimated mileage of up to 1,600,000 km. Moreover, according to the statements of representatives of the American corporation, such batteries are “almost ready.”
According to assumptions, the Chinese company KATL will become GM’s strategic partner in the creation and production of batteries
In addition, it was previously noted that GM is developing a new supercharged 6.2L V8 engine for its trucks and SUVs. There are practically no details about the new engine.
