Genesis recalls 2021 G80 and GV80 over possible fuel leak

A number of newly delivered 2021 Genesis G80 and GV80 models are being recalled in the United States.

The South Korean automaker said in a recall issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The reason is that the pipe connecting the high pressure fuel pump to the fuel rail may have been manufactured with end fittings that do not meet internal alignment requirements, which could result in insufficient sealing and increase the risk of leakage and fire.

The recall affected 31 Genesis G80 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder models produced from January 28, 2021 to February 5, 2021 in South Korea for sale in the United States, as well as 116 Genesis GV80 models produced between January 22, 2021 from February 4, 2021. In total, Genesis will recall 147 vehicles.

Hyundai says the issue was raised following claims of fuel odor emanating from the just-delivered 2021 GV80. The manufacturer investigated the supplier of the high-pressure fuel pipe and found that a damaged screw guide during manufacturing resulted in incorrectly shaped fuel lines being supplied to the company. To date, there are no known accidents or injuries associated with this problem.

Genesis will notify owners and dealerships at the end of May 2021 and advise owners to take their vehicle to the nearest authorized service center where the high pressure fuel pipe will be replaced free of charge.
