Genesis G80 will receive a fully electric versionMarch 19, 2020
Genesis has just unveiled its first SUV, the GV80 (codenamed JX1), which is the first vehicle on the new dedicated rear-wheel drive platform known as the M3.
The current G80 was launched in 2015 and was postponed several times, and finally, the Hyundai Motor Group decided to release the GV80 first. Albert Birermann, head of research and development, initially brought in by the Hyundai Group to focus on performance, says he would like to see him, but is not in a hurry with this. Biermann is also a supporter of EV electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles – the GV80 concept had a fuel cell – and Genesis is also expected to launch FCEV at some point.
Also this year, a smaller compact crossover GV70 will appear, which has a separate rear-wheel drive platform with a G70 sports sedan; This model was introduced in 2017. Genesis said it will have three crossovers, and MotorTrend confirmed this week that the third SUV will be an electric car, probably a mid-size one, on a new electric platform. This will come next year, as stated by William Lee, global head of the Genesis brand.
Genesis executives said earlier that the lineup will have six cars by 2021. It was originally planned to build three sedans, two crossovers and a coupe. Ever since this plan was conceived, there has been a change in leadership in Genesis and a change in market tastes.
