Ford is preparing for the premiere of an SUV based on a model of another brandFebruary 15, 2019
The new SUV should debut by the end of next year. The main market for the model will be India.
Earlier, we talked about how Ford sought support from Volkswagen and Indian Mahindra in order to save. As a result, the Americans almost formed an alliance with the Germans. Almost – because so far the memorandum of understanding has been signed (in January 2019), the partnership of auto giants is known in general terms. So, for starters, Ford and VW will work together to produce mid-size pickups and commercial vans, but there are no details about the models. Ford was also able to come to terms with the Indians, and even earlier than with VW – the agreement was signed in 2018. According to him, Mahindra will supply Ford with his engines, in addition, the companies will be engaged in the development of new multimedia systems. But that is not all. According to the Indian edition of Autocar, Ford is preparing to bring to the local market a new crossover, built on the basis of the Mahindra model.
It is expected that the second-generation XUV500 will be taken as the basis for the American-made SUV, and the latter is not yet represented. Indian journalists believe that Ford’s crossover will make its debut by the end of 2020, and the donor SUV will probably go on sale earlier – in the first half of next year.
According to preliminary data, the “American” will differ from Mahindra XUV500 in its exterior and interior design. In general, the Ford crossover should be one step higher than the “relative”. Plus, while the all-terrain all-terrain vehicle has an “improved” chassis, that is, with its own settings. The novelty will be offered in six-and seven-seater versions.
Ford will get the engine from the “source”: the new 2.0 diesel engine developed by Mahindra, the engine power will be about 180 hp The current XUV500 is available with mHawk 2.2 turbodiesel (also developed by Mahindra), delivering 155 hp. Another current SUV has a gasoline version of this engine, its return is 140 hp For the first-generation XUV500, all-wheel drive is provided, so the 4WD version will most likely be in the new car, which means the Ford cross.
Last year, the American brand managed to increase sales in India – 97 804 cars were transferred to customers, which is 12% more than in 2017. The cross-hatch Freestyle (in Europe – Ka + Active), which entered the market in the spring, was the salvation for Ford: in 2018, the hatchback took the second place among all Ford models in India with the result of 18,643 sold copies. On the first line – EcoSport, and this is the only model that showed a positive dynamics (51 973 units, + 15%). Mahindra itself sold 232,188 cars (+ 1%) in 2018 in India, of which 25,241 copies (-5%) fell to the XUV500.
Recall that last year another crossover appeared in the Ford lineup, which is not a brand’s own development, the new Territory, built on the basis of the “Chinese” JMC Yusheng S330. Jiangling Motors Corporation (aka JMC) is a longtime Ford partner, the Americans in China have a joint venture with this company, and it also produces Territory. Cross can be bought only in the China. Apparently, a related SUV Mahindra XUV500 also does not get out of India.
