Ford is confident that the new Focus ST is “sharper, sharper in control” than the VW Golf GTIMay 23, 2020
According to the designers of the “evil” American kid Ford Focus ST, their car has much more precise control than its German competitor – VW Golf GTI.
In automotive markets such as Europe, where the powerful compact hatchback segment is extremely competitive and you can choose from a variety of models, you will have to work hard to convince people that your car is the best. The guys from Ford believe that they managed to construct just such a car.
Ford Performace Europe’s chief boss, Stefan Menzinger, said many tests were made during the development of the latest version of the high-performance Focus ST.
The American novelty was compared with its direct competitors in the person of Hyundai i30N, Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf GTI. As a result of numerous studies, it was concluded that the new Focus ST is one step ahead of the “charged” Golf GTI in terms of handling and performance. “We created a car with much sharper and more precise steering than the Golf GTI.”
Under the hood of the new Ford Focus ST is a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that develops an impressive 280 hp. (420 Nm). Buyers have a choice between a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission.
The novelty does not have an all-wheel drive system, as in the previous Ford Focus RS, but comes with a mechanical LSD (differential) with electronic control. Menzinger mentioned that the closest competitors of this car use an electronic differential. “But they just do it by vectorizing the torque by using the brake, and that’s a completely different approach,” he added.
