Ford hybrids can recognize the boundaries of environmental zonesOctober 30, 2019
Ford Corporation has expanded the test program, which involved rechargeable hybrid vans on the roads of German Cologne.
So, the company, with the support of city municipal services, has begun the final stage of testing the system, which makes it possible to automatically switch to electric traction when entering special environmental zones. This assistant operates on the basis of blockchain and geozoning technologies.
Over the next year, employees in Cologne’s municipalities will drive 9 Ford Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid vans and one Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid van. These cars have a FordPass Connect LTE modem and a special device with a GPS receiver that sets the boundaries of the area where it is forbidden to move on cars with an internal combustion engine.
The time of entry and exit from such a territory, as well as mileage on electric traction is recorded in a closed distributed base, accessible only to operators of corporate car parks and the city government. Thanks to this system, it is possible to tune the boundaries of eco-zones: change existing ones or create new ones. In addition, updated information will be automatically uploaded to the vehicle’s on-board system.
By the way, orders for the hybrid Ford Transit Custom are already being accepted. At the same time, they will begin supplying the hybrid before the end of the year. The van has a 1.0 liter EcoBoost turbo engine. On electric traction, he is able to cover a distance of up to 56 km.
The geofence module will become available next year. It will have the same functions as on test cars, but there will be no blockchain.
