Ford Fiesta prepared for category R2
Ford Fiesta hatchback version R2 has been prepared specifically for the rally. The front wheel drive was created by the British studio M-Sport, which for twenty years has been working with Ford.
The machine is prepared according to the requirements of a relatively democratic class R2 – the body, suspension and engine are made on the basis of serial components. This category is designed for front-wheel-drive cars with 1600-cc “aspirated” or smaller turbo engines. But according to the new rules, homologation can be obtained only with a supercharged engine in volume from 927 to 1067 cc.
Although the serial Fiesta of the new generation has much in common with its predecessor, the Fiesta R2 differs from the rally car of the previous generation in almost everything: in fact, only the basic configuration of the engine is preserved.
The three-cylinder turbo engine with a volume of 999 cubic centimeters, suffering from a lack of reliability, received a new “stuffing”: its power increased from 180 to 200 horsepower, and the moment from 250 to 290 Nm. The motor control unit is a special racing, Life Racing L88. Turbo pit should eliminate antilag system with three programs of work. The gearbox is also new: it is a five-speed cam of the French company Sadev with three types of differential lock (each of them is adjustable). Clutch AP Racing – two-disc.
The safety cage configuration is new, the crew landing has also been changed – the navigator’s seat for the sake of safety and better weight distribution is shifted back. The rally drivers had complaints about the suspension of the former Fiesta: there were not enough adjustments, and there was no rear stabilizer at all. The new car has received Reiger shock absorbers with three adjustments both in front and with two in the back, and on request also an adjustable stabilizer.
Alcon brakes with ventilated discs with a diameter of 310 millimeters in asphalt specifications or 285 millimeters in gravel and 280 millimeters in diameter were used at the back were used. plant in Cologne. Prices have not yet been announced, but judging by the rates for the last R2 Fiesta, it should cost about seventy thousand euros in finished form. The serial Ford Fiesta ST-Line with the most powerful 140-strong version of the liter engine Ecoboost costs in Germany from 21,100 euros. There is also a “charged” Fiesta ST with a 200-horsepower engine, but it is not suitable as the basis for the rally: the volume of its three-cylinder engine is 1.5 liters.
