Ford has figured out how to deal with the “smell of a new car,” which is the main problem for automakers in the Chinese market. Local buyers are unhappy with the way car saloons smell, and the size of this problem is twice the rejection of high fuel consumption.
The specific smell in the cabin of the new car is caused by volatile organic substances. They are distinguished by plastic, leather, vinyl, as well as sealants and adhesives that are used in production. Ford offers to literally “dry” the car before selling it: it is left under the sun with the windows down and the air conditioner turned on until the unpleasant odors are completely removed from the cabin. The “drying” system uses special software and a set of sensors, and it works only in vehicles with an autonomous control system.
In July 2017, the company hired 18 Chinese experts on smells, they are also called “golden noses”, which sniff every element of the trim. According to a J.D. study Power, an unpleasant smell in the car – the main factor that repels the Chinese from buying a new car, ahead of the safety value and fuel consumption indicator.
In October, Ford introduced a new model for the Chinese market. The crossover is called Territory and, in fact, is a rewrite of the JMC Yusheng S330. Machines differ in design and equipment of the front end.
