FIAT halts production of 124 Spider Roadster for EuropeDecember 7, 2019
The company abandoned an interesting, but not in demand model. Moreover, production for America will continue for another year. The information is officially confirmed by the European representative of the company.
A little earlier we already learned that the Fiat 124 Spider will not receive a successor. Now, official information has arrived on the company’s readiness to stop production. Judging by the words of foreign publications, the model had a decent sales volume, but, unfortunately, was not sufficient for the commercial benefit of continuing the contract with Mazda. The model itself is a copy of the Mazda MX-5.
Another reason for abandoning the model was the cost of upgrading the turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder engine to meet Euro 6d-Temp and Euro 6d emission standards. Danilo Coglianese, Head of Communications at Fiat & Abarth, noted that the Fiat 124 Spider remains the leader in sales in Italy, Spain and Switzerland, as well as the second best-selling model in Europe in its segment.
“But its segment is rapidly declining in Europe: by the end of 2019, we expect it to be sold in an amount of about 25,000 units – less than a third compared to 2013. While other segments, on the contrary, are growing rapidly, ”said Coglianese.
Meanwhile, production of the Fiat 124 Spider will continue for another year for the North American market.
