Fiat excluded 124 Spider from the UK linae, without giving reasonsJanuary 8, 2019
The model, also known as Type 348, 124 Spider, appeared in 2015. The compact sports car is based on the Mazda MX-5 Miata, but has a unique design from Pininfarina.
Despite the fact that the Fiat 124 Spider has a good proven platform, a unique design and its own style, combined with a fairly low price – its sales leave much to be desired. In the United States in 2018, only 3,551 units were sold, Europe accounted for twice as many, and this is a very weak figure. And in the UK a very modest number of copies were sold, which prompted the manufacturer to exclude it from the local model line.
In addition, the model is threatened by a new environmental standard. Therefore, the company will have to upgrade the car to more stringent requirements. In some countries, the model is now available only in limited quantities and only in certain configurations.
What awaits the eccentric Fiat 124 Spider roadster in the future? Perhaps the company will refuse it completely. And perhaps modifies the 1.4-liter engine, installing a particulate filter on it. There is also a chance that the model will receive a compact 1.3-liter turbo engine capable of developing up to 180 horsepower.
But experts are confident that the model will remain niche, and will continue to be sold exclusively to support image and recognition.
Meanwhile, Fiat Panda and Jeep Wrangler failed Euro NCAP crash tests. Fiat Panda received the lowest ball, and the Jeep Wrangler received only one star.
