Ferrari supercars will receive a joystick instead of a steering wheel and pedalsNovember 4, 2019
The automaker has invented a new way to control cars, with which the cabs of the new Ferrari supercars will look like the cockpits of aircraft. The Italians patented a joystick control that can take on the functions of a traditional steering wheel and pedals.
Ferrari has filed a patent application with the European Patent Office for a new car driving scheme that is radically different from all that we saw earlier. The Italians invented a special joystick, similar to the one that can be found in the cockpit. He alone can replace the steering wheel and pedals. They plan to place it on the right side of the driver’s seat cushion. In theory, controlling a supercar with the joystick is easy: to get started, you must tilt the joystick forward, and to stop back. For turning left and right, the joystick is tilted to the corresponding side – it gives commands to the front wheels.
The speed of the car will directly depend on the angle of inclination forward. To maintain a constant speed, it will be enough to return the joystick to a neutral position.
This is theoretically. But in practice, such a control algorithm raises many questions. The company itself is confident that the joystick will be many times more intuitive than the steering wheel and pedals. The timing of the launch of new items in circulation has not yet been reported. Obviously, the process is not fast.
