Fernando Alonso to participate in Dakar 2020 MarathonOctober 25, 2019
The Spanish racer will compete for Toyota Gazoo Racing team
The Dakar 2020 Rally Press Service has officially confirmed the participation in the marathon of two-time Formula 1 champion, WEC endurance champion and two-time 24-Hour Le Mans race winner Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard will compete in the race behind the wheel of the factory Toyota Hilux V8 4×4.
Sturman Alonso will be his compatriot, five-time winner of the motorcycle rally marathon, Mark Coma. Coma has twice paired with Alonso: the Spanish duo participated in a rally-raid in South Africa and Morocco, but both races ended in crashes.
In addition to Alonso, Toyota Gazoo Racing will be represented by Qatari pilot, three-time Dakar winner Nasser Al-Atty, 2009 Rally Marathon winner Ginel de Villiers of South Africa and experienced Dutchman Bernhard Ten Brinke. The former Formula 1 champion has admitted that Dakar is one of the most difficult races, but Alonso expects to learn a lot from other athletes and become better as a pilot.
The Dakar 2020 Marathon will be held for the first time in Saudi Arabia. The race will last from January 5 to January 17, 2020: pilots will have to overcome 12 stages and drive a total of nine thousand kilometers. Jeddah rally starts and finishes at al-Kiddia resort.
