Fernando Alonso checked the racing Toyota Hilux on off-road track
September 17, 2019The pickup was built by Toyota Gazoo Racing specifically to participate in the Dakar rally.
There are practically no serial components left in it. Received Toyota Hilux was tested by Fernando Alonso and Mark Coma on the road, on sand, soft and hard soil, as well as other surfaces that may occur during the race. Within two days, the two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso covered about 700 km. The area in Szczecin (Poland) acted as a test site.
The 2019 Hilux pickup truck, which won the Dakar rally in Latin America, features a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8. The engine provides 385 hp. and 620 Nm of torque.
“This is the first test for Fernando in Europe, when Hilux traveled to completely different territories and conditions compared to Namibia, where he was two weeks ago. We were able to double the planned run for this test, which demonstrates how quickly Fernando got used to Hilux, ” – said team leader Glyn Hall.
Over the next five months, Fernando Alonso will continue training races throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The rally will begin on January 5th. It includes 12 stages, the total range exceeds 9000 km. The organizers signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia as the organizer of the rally for the next 5 years, but the terms of the contract do not preclude the accession of other countries as partners.
