F2: MP Motorsport called the pilots for 2019March 22, 2019
The team of MP Motorsport remained the last, a week before the start of the Formula 2 season, which did not announce the lineup for 2019. The question arose whether the team would take part in the championship at all, but in the end, the pilots who would play for it this season were still named. As we predicted, Mahavir Ragunathan was one of them. But the second name can be considered a surprise – Jordan King returned to the team.
King is well known in the racing environment, in 2013, he was the first attempt to become the champion of the British Formula 3, and he was predicted a great future. However, in the older series to achieve significant success he did not succeed, although he was the development driver of the Formula 1 Manor team and conducted tests for it. From 2015 to 2017, he competed in GP2 / Formula 2, as part of Racing Engineering and MP Motorsport, during which time he won two victories (both in 2016), after which he left the championship and went overseas.
Last season King spent at IndyCar, speaking for Ed Carpenter Racing, and also tried his hand at the FIA WEC in the LMP2 category. But great success could not be achieved here, and the 25-year-old Briton made an unexpected decision to return to Formula 2. His contract is for the full season, but at the same time, Jordan will continue to perform in the WEC. In addition, he will be released at the start of the Indy-500 race, which means he will miss the Formula 2 stage in Monaco.
Mahavir Ragunathan is also no newcomer to the European series, although in Formula 2 will be the first time. Once he without much success tried his hand at European Formula 3 and GP3, and his best achievement was the vice-champion title in Auto GP in 2016, but the series itself was no longer of professional interest from that point of view. In 2017, he won the semi-amateur BOSS GP championship in the Auto GP category.
In this off-season, a 20-year-old Indian worked with MP Motorsport during the second series of tests, so the contract with him did not come as a surprise. However, for him it will actually be the first full season in the professional formula series since 2015.
