Automakers and suppliers are investigating potential issue that could affect passenger cars equipped with autonomous driving technology
“The question that worries us most is how the sensors and components perform after two to three years in service,” said Karl Obermeier, director of future mobility for certification service provider TÜV Rheinland.
Since unmanned technologies are new to the automotive industry, the reaction of radars and lidars to salts, water and other reagents remains a mystery. The degradation of these systems is a major topic with regard to the functional safety of autonomous vehicles. Many automakers and Tier 1 and Tier 2 technology providers recognize this is a big problem.
Ensuring sufficient security for commercial automation systems has proven difficult. Car manufacturers and suppliers know they will be held responsible for Tier 3 failures in private vehicles.
In comparison, a Level 4 robotaxis fleet, which will be too expensive for most consumers, is likely to be monitored and maintained regularly, and the system will be diagnosed at frequent intervals to better predict potential failures.
Sensor reliability, durability, and degradation have been key concerns for Tier 3 vehicles, says panelist Mircea Gradu, senior vice president of product and quality at sensor company Velodyne Lidar.
