Experts have named eco-friendly cars, ingloriously gone down in history

Leading automakers are trying to meet all the requirements of higher authorities in the production of their machines. In particular, an important factor is the environmental friendliness, reduction of harmful exhausts to the atmosphere. At the same time, most of the models produced by world automakers failed to meet the expectations of the creators and were ignominiously forgotten. The editors of Top Gear identified nine bright “eco-friendly handicrafts” and made their rating.

The first line of the rating was taken by the car Fisker Karma, the first time left the conveyor of the automaker Fisker Automotive in Finland in 2012. Premium hybrid could drive a battery of 51 kilometers.

The cost of the car started from 102 000 dollars. In the most charged version on the price tag was the amount of $ 116,000. From the beginning of production until December 2012 in North America and Europe, it was possible to sell 1,800 copies of Karma, of which only 1,600 cars were sold in the USA alone.

The release of this hybrid was suspended in November 2012, when the only supplier of batteries, the company A123 Systems, went bankrupt. And a year later the automobile brand Fisker also recognized itself as ruined.

The company went under the hammer for $ 25 million. After a while, it was resold to the Chinese company Wanxiang Group. And here two years ago the new owner again began to release Karma Revero, but already in the updated version.

In second place is Volkswagen Golf Ecomatic. Even before the appearance of the “start-stop” function, this manufacturer came up with a version of the Golf MkIII with an atmospheric diesel engine and a semi-automatic transmission as a solution to the burning issue with the environment and a reduction in the consumption of gasoline. Serial production of the model started in July 1994 under the nameplate Ecomatic, meaning “economical” and “automatic”.

However, the version of the Golf MkIII did not live up to the expectations of the brand and its consumers. First, the capacity of the 1.9-liter enginewagen Golf Ecomatic was only 64 horsepower. Secondly, the system disconnected the engine when removing the foot from the gas pedal or stopping the car for more than five seconds. In some situations, it was possible to lose the engine braking function altogether. Thirdly, the engine itself was very noisy and sounded like the sound of a tractor. In addition, the system itself, and an enlarged generator and battery, an additional power-assisted pump to compensate for the disconnected engine, cost the car owners a very substantial amount.

As a plus, it can be noted that the consumption of gasoline was only 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers, the number of harmful exhausts to the atmosphere was reduced by 20 percent.

However, the diesel engine created in the same year with direct injection and supercharging proved to be more powerful and economical even without additional equipment. This is what influenced the cessation of the release of this model.

In the top three – quad RIVA G-Wiz. This vehicle had a plastic body and a theoretical four seats. In London, they were going to use it as the flagship of ecology and electrification. In England, it cost 7,000 pounds, and was approximately in the same price category as the Smart ForTwo model. With a power reserve of 80 kilometers and the absence of any safety system, the car was only a consolation for environmentalists, and not a profitable investment.

Next is Smart Fortwo CDI. Six years ago, a miniature car with a three-cylinder diesel engine of 800 cubic inches was considered the most economical and was available at an affordable price.

He consumes 3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers and allocated only 83 grams of CO2 per 100 kilometers. Auto approached for trips around the city, but it turned out not suitable for long journeys.

Closes the top five electric cars General Motors EV-1. He was the first and only electric car, produced under the name of General Motors. This hybrid lasted only three years – from 1996 to 1999. In addition, it was not for sale, but was leased to residents of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento (California), Phoenix and Tucson (Arizona).

The General Motors brand came to the conclusion that electric cars do not produce as profitably as gasoline or hybrid cars. In 2002, the program was closed, cars were seized from indignant owners and destroyed. And only forty copies with dismantled electric motors brand allowed to give to museums and educational institutions, provided that they are not under any pretext will not be returned to the streets of cities.

The sixth position was the car Oldsmobile Diesel, appeared in the late 70-ies during the oil crisis. The car received from the creators 120-strong diesel V8, which had a lot of common parts with the petrol V8. The unsatisfactory quality of the diesel, together with unreliable components, prevented the car from gaining worldwide fame.

In the seventh place, experts Top Gear put the model Honda FCX Clarity. The machine was characterized by operational refueling, silent driving, easy handling. However, the collection, storage and transportation of hydrogen in sufficient quantities to develop sales of such cars, have posed an irresolute task for the Honda brand and other automakers. As a result, the car went into oblivion.

The eighth position was occupied by Detroit Electric. 13 000 electric vehicles of this brand were manufactured in the beginning of the 20th century – from 1907 to 1939. These cars could travel at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour, they were ideal for cities, and less stinky than horses or cars of that time.

Well, the rating closes the first five-door car Audi A2 TDI. He could spend only three liters of fuel, breaking 100 kilometers at the same time. The main disadvantage was its high price, which is why the model lost to other cars in the subcompact segment of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
