Euro NCAP caught manufacturers in the preparation of special machines for crash testsOctober 10, 2018
Euro NCAP and the British research center Thatcham Research announced the detection of suspicious parts in test cars. ISOFIX airbags and mounts marked “Crash Test Only” and “Euro NCAP Only” (For crash test only or Euro NCAP only) are found in models from a number of manufacturers.
“Sometimes during tests, we find details with Euro NCAP test marks,” – said Matthew Avery, head of research at Thatcham Research. – Most often it is airbags. In truth, such markings look suspicious. ” All cases of detection of such parts are thoroughly investigated: representatives of Euro NCAP and Thatcham can even visit the factory of the manufacturer or supplier of components.
One of the surveyed companies reported that crash test cars are assembled separately, and the markings are used by the security departments in order for the necessary parts to be installed on a specific machine. This is necessary in order to avoid confusion and not to delay production, as the time is very limited.
According to Avery, in 99 percent of cases there is a reasonable explanation for such markings. However, neither Thatcham nor Euro NCAP can see all the details, and therefore, some things may escape attention. Over the past few years, the number of labeled components has decreased dramatically: a company faces one or two cases per year. Previously, there were many more.
