The compact cross KX1 is designed for China – it is a localized version of the crossover Kia Stonic, which is available in Europe and Korea. The harbinger of the Chinese version of the model – the concept of Yi Pao – the brand demonstrated in April 2018 in the framework of the Beijing Motor Show. The serial crossover retained the exterior design of the concept.
Externally from the Korean and European Stonic Chinese KX1 differs overlay on the front bumper and other exterior mirrors, and “stuffing” the rear lights. The top version of the cross for the China, instead of round foglamps, is equipped with LED daytime running lights in the form of “boomerangs” and two branch pipes of the exhaust system – in other countries such solutions are not used.
The length of the KX1 is 4,100 mm, which is 40 mm smaller than that of the Stonic. The width of the Chinese version is 1 735 mm (-25 mm compared to Stonic), height – 1,503 mm (-17 mm), wheelbase – 2,570 mm (-10 mm).
In the interior of the Kia KX1 there are also differences: the touchscreen of the multimedia system in the Chinese version is built into the front panel, and does not rise above it, as in Stonic; the side deflectors of the blowing are round, not rectangular. In addition, the KX1 received a different central tunnel, the other steering wheel and the climate control unit.
The new SUV will be offered to the Chinese with an atmospheric 1.4, familiar to other local models of Kia. According to preliminary data, the KX1 engine will have two variants of power – 95 and 100 hp, the engine is combined with manual or automatic transmission. In Europe, the Kia Stonic is available with a gasoline turbo 1.0 T-GDi (120 hp), atmospherics 1.25 MPI (84 hp) and 1.4 MPI (100 hp), and diesel 1.6 CRDi (110 hp). For the Korean version there are 100-hp 1.4 MPI and diesel 1.6 E-VGT with 110 hp. The all-wheel drive is neither KX1 nor Stonic, although the nearest “relative” of the model – cross Hyundai Kona – is a version of 4×4.
Production of KX1 will be established in China at the joint venture JV Kia and Dongfeng, the new product can be delivered to the local market in August. The price has not been announced yet. Most likely, KX1 will be the cheapest model in the SUV line of the brand. For the time being, the role of the entry-level SUV is reserved for KX3 (outside of China it is not for sale) – this cross costs 116,800 yuan. By the way, KX3 with ICE has failed in the Chinese market, against this background Kia is preparing to launch an electric version of the model. It is possible that the KX1 will drive out the petrol KX3 from the Chinese definitively.
