The head of Tesla Motors said that the new compact crossover is fully ready for production, but its mass production will begin only in 2020

The head of Tesla Motors has approved the final prototype of the new compact Tesla Model Y crossover, which is now fully ready for mass production. This was announced at a meeting with investors and analysts of the American manufacturer of electric cars, reports The Verge.

At the same time, Elon Musk said that a full-fledged mass production of the car would start no earlier than 2020, although it was previously assumed that production should start a year earlier. It is assumed that at the moment “Tesla” is simply nowhere to release a compact crossover. All production facilities of the Fremont plant are occupied, including due to the high demand for Tesla Model 3.

Earlier, Tesla Motors has agreed with the Shanghai government to purchase a land plot for the construction of a new plant for the production of electric cars and batteries – Gigafactory 3. A total of about two billion dollars will be invested in the project. It is not excluded that Tesla Model Y will be produced in China.

As for the crossover itself, it will borrow the existing chassis from the Tesla Model 3. At the same time, some technical and stylistic solutions will be borrowed from the older Model X. For example, the compact crossover will receive branded rear doors, which the company calls “falcon wings”. According to preliminary data, Tesla Model Y will be equipped with two motors (one each – on the front and rear axle) and will be offered with sets of batteries of various capacities.

It is assumed that following the Model Y crossover, Tesla will launch a pickup truck. Earlier, Elon Musk said that the novelty already in standard equipment will have two electric engines with “crazy torque” and four-wheel drive. Plus, the base car will get an adaptive air suspension.
