Electric Volkswagen I.D. R was faster than Loeb in the qualification of “Race to the clouds”June 21, 2018
The Volkswagen electric sports prototype showed the best time in the qualification of the famous “Race to the clouds” – a competition for high-speed climbing the Pikes Peak mountain in the USA. The car was 11 seconds faster than the second-placed car, the Norma M20 SF PKP gasoline, and also faster than Sebastien Loeb, who spoke here five years ago.
For qualification, a shorter version of the route is used, 8.3 kilometers from 20 kilometers. Volkswagen sports prototype overcame this segment in 3 minutes 16,083 seconds. For comparison, in 2013, Sebastien Loeb passed Pikes Peak qualification for ten seconds slower, but in the combat race he established an absolute record of the route, which can not be beaten until now. Then the nine-time WRC champion driving a 875-strong Peugeot 208 T16 prototype reached the top of the mountain in 8 minutes 13,878 seconds.
The record in the class of electric cars belongs to the Latvian sports prototype Drive eO PP100, which drove the Pikes Peak in 8 minutes 57,118 seconds. In Volkswagen expect to beat this achievement.
Volkswagen sports prototype is equipped with two electric motors with a total capacity of 680 horsepower. The electric car is accelerate to 100 km/h in 2.25 seconds. The maximum speed is 240 kilometers per hour. Behind the wheel of the car sits the winner of “24 Hours of Le Mans” and a three-time winner of “Pikes Peak” Roman Dumas. Its best time to complete the course is 8 minutes 51,445 seconds.
“Race to the clouds” is held since 1916. Earlier the road was a rolled up primer, but now it is completely covered with asphalt. Participants overcome the 20-kilometer track, which consists of 156 turns. The start is at an altitude of 2860 meters above sea level, the finish is 4300 meters.
