Electric MINI has surpassed all expectationsJuly 30, 2020
The 11,000th Mini Electric has already rolled off the assembly line at the Oxford plant in 9 months since the start of sales.
Since production began at the Cowley, Oxfordshire plant, 11,000 Mini Electrics have been built last November. Of these, 3 thousand orders for the car came from the UK alone. This means the UK is the second largest market for electrified Mini, accounting for 19% of all plug-in hybrid Electric and Countryman SE sales. The company predicts that a third of the three-door Mini’s production will come from electrified versions by 2021.
While production numbers are slightly different from those of the Nissan Leaf, which typically rolls off the assembly line in Sunderland at around 21,000 units, this is a good indicator for a new product launched before the global pandemic that caused plant closures and a drop in demand for new cars.
Recall that the MINI company presented its first serial electric hatchback in early July, called the Cooper SE. The company calls the novelty “the world’s first fully electric premium compact car.” It should be noted that the exterior of the model strongly resembles the MINI Electric Concept, shown in 2017. The novelty has the same “closed” radiator grille with yellow inserts, exclusive aluminum rims, and a charging port on the right.
The serial MINI Cooper SE received an electric motor from the BMW i3S, which develops 184 hp. power and 270 Nm of torque. The motor allows the hatchback to accelerate from standstill to 60 km / h in 3.9 seconds, while the hatchback takes 7.3 seconds to accelerate to 100 km / h. The maximum speed is forcibly limited to 150 km / h. A set of lithium-ion batteries installed under the floor of the car provides a range of 235-270 km, depending on the modification. With 11 kW charging, the power reserve can be replenished up to 80% in 2.5 hours, and with a 50 kW system in just 35 minutes.
The luggage compartment is comparable to the base MINI hatchbacks with traditional 3- and 4-cylinder internal combustion engines and is 211 liters and 731 liters with the rear seats folded down.
