Electric cars are still very expensive for BentleyMarch 9, 2020
Bentley has an ambitious plan to electrify the model line by 2023, but this does not mean that the British brand is ready to present its debut electric car.
In an interview with Top Gear, the head of the British brand Adrian Hallmark confirmed that the debut of the first electric car from the brand will not take place until the mid-2020s – when the batteries are supposed to evolve from lithium-ion to solid-state, which will save up to 30% weight. without losing capacity at the same time.
Until this time, the Bentley electric model should not be expected – at best, until 2025.
“The price of batteries at the moment is 6 times higher than the cost of internal combustion engines, and the price of a power unit is 20% of the cost of the entire machine,” said Hallmark.
“All this becomes the reason that switching the model to electric traction doubles its price, since the batteries are very expensive at the moment. I hope that by 2025 or 2026 we will still be able to produce an electric Bentley with the right wheelbase, the right dimensions and shapes, ”says the top manager.
Hallmark also noted that the debut British premium electric car can be developed by the specialists of the Mulliner court atelier as a unique model, which will be released in a very small number of copies. And serial electric cars in the current period remain very expensive for Bentley.
