Drag racing: Mercedes SLR McLaren vs modern McLaren 540C

A video showing the race of McLaren generations has appeared on the Auto Trader YouTube channel. The ten-year-old Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and the modern McLaren 540C are participating.

Long ago, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was the “king” of the supercar world. When it debuted in 2003, its dramatic exterior with a huge Formula 1-style bonnet was second only to what was hidden underneath. Its 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine develops 617 horsepower, which is still a crazy figure in 2020, but 17 years ago it was one of the most powerful production cars in the world.

It’s a fantastic mid-engined supercar in the McLaren sports series, but while the SLR was the king of its day, the 540C is McLaren’s entry-level model. However, it boasts a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 generating 540 hp. It’s also significantly lighter than the beefy SLR, and if you compare the passport details of the two cars, they are actually quite comparable.

This is the essence of this series of races, featured on YouTube’s Auto Trader, hosted by former Top Gear host Rory Reed. Despite the big power shortage and the colossal difference in torque, Rory Reed decided to see if the new mid-engined McLaren could outperform the old front-engined Mercedes SLR McLaren.

As in many drag races of this kind, the answer cannot be given by relying on just one race – these cars have tried to beat each other several times. With a large engine up front, no launch control and massive torque, the Merc was literally no traction compared to the 540c and its best tech.

Not so long ago, our publication wrote about a race in which a Porsche 911 Carrera S and a tuned BMW X3 Competition took part. A team from a foreign YouTube channel decided to find out whether a tuned version of the already powerful BMW X3 M Competition crossover could overtake the 992 generation Porsche 911 Carrera S sports coupe.
