Drag race: new BMW M8 vs M5 with the same engineFebruary 15, 2020
Bloggers compare the dynamics of the 625-horsepower BMW at the test site
Carwow’s YouTube observer compared the acceleration and braking performance of two “charged” BMWs: the new M8 Competition coupe and the M5 Competition sedan. Both cars have identical technical stuffing, similar weight and declared characteristics, while the sedan is one and a half times cheaper than the “eight” of the same power.
Both Bavarian models are equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 TwinTurbo rated at 625 horsepower (750 Nm). Both the coupe and the all-wheel drive sedan, the 8-speed automatic gearbox is responsible for transmitting torque, both vehicles have the identical launch-control system.
At the same time, the head of the BMW M-division, Marcus Flash, called the M8 “a real supercar” and stated that despite the common filling with the M5, the M8 coupe was “a completely different car.”
The British channel carwow brought the M8 and M5 to a duel in similar trim levels, so the difference in weight does not exceed 15 kilograms, and the sedan turned out to be lighter than the coupe.
Although according to official data, the advantage of the M8 Competition over the M5 Competition in accelerating from zero to 100 kilometers per hour does not exceed 0.1 seconds, the result of the quarter-mile race was unexpected.
Carwow bloggers repeatedly measured the time of the M5 at a distance of 402 meters and the range of results was very large. The competition for brake efficiency ended in surprise: the carbon-ceramic coupe mechanisms lost to the usual metal wheels of the sedan.
