David Custer will take over as director of the Dakar Rally RaidMarch 9, 2019
After 15 years as director of the rally raid, Dakar Etienne Lavigne will give up the position to David Custer, a multiple participant in the rally as a pilot and navigator.
Lavigne, who has worked with the team of organizers of the marathon since 1992, will move to a position in the promoter company of the Amaury Sport Organization rally.
His successor, Custer, worked for ten years (2006-2016) as a sports director of the rally and participated in the rally-marathons himself – on his account the Dakar podium and two victories in the Silk Road rally as navigator Cyril Despres, as well as the podium in the motorcycle standings Rally Dakar.
In the penultimate stage of the Dakar-2019, David Custer performed together with Stefan Peteransel, but suffered a back injury during a hard landing of the X-Raid Mini under the control of a compatriot.
Custers’ appointment took place against the backdrop of a foggy future of the rally-marathon, whose relations with the South American governments have deteriorated in recent years. The Dakar 2020 format can be anything from a traditional route through one or more countries in South America to returning to Africa or even a trip to the Middle East.
