Dakar moved to Saudi ArabiaApril 26, 2019
Legendary rally-raid replaced the continent
The organizers of the “Dakar” announced the transfer of the rally-raid in Saudi Arabia. The legendary off-road marathon, which has been held since 1979, will celebrate its Middle East debut next January. The last 10 years, the race took place on the territory of South America.
The route of the “Dakar 2020” is laid through almost all administrative districts of Saudi Arabia. The race starts in the city of Jeddah, where the legendary fountain of King Fahd, which throws out water at a speed of 375 kilometers per hour, is located. Then the pilots and mechanics will rest in the capital, Riyadh. Turning around in the Sharqiyah region, Dakar will finish in the resort town of Al Kiddia, not far from Riyadh, whose construction began only last year.
Start the first “Dakar” was given December 26, 1978. 182 participants gathered at the Trocadero in Paris for the first time to overcome 10 thousand kilometers to the capital of Senegal. The race was held on the African continent until 2007. In 2008, due to the attack of terrorists and the death of four French citizens, the rally-raid was canceled and a year later they were transferred to South America.
The previous “Dakar” was held in Peru. The riders started in Lima, turned around in the south of the country, in the Tacna region, and finished again in Lima. The rally-raid route for 70 percent consisted of special sandy stages passing through the Ica desert. The winners of the off-road class were Nasser Al-Attiyah (Toyota), the trucks — Eduard Nikolaev (KAMAZ).
